Social gaming – Playing the crowd

what is social gaming?

According to the tutorial resource, "social games" are games created and monetized by social networking sites. That is, communities of gamers form in various ways and via different online platforms, but the essential thing is that they form around, within, and concerning the game and the experiences and activities it implies.

A phenomenon is known as "network convergence" describes how more than one person shares individuals from social circles. In online gaming communities, players frequently share their friends and social networks (Parks & Floyd, 1996). Therefore, the likelihood of network integration increases proportionately with the number of online gamers that share their friends. A sense of group membership, or a sense of community, can develop among online gamers due to the sharing of friends, which can lead to an increase in both interpersonal relationships and shared interests (Blanchard & Horan, 1998).

What is the definition of a "gaming community"?

As a high-quality communication system, online games create a virtual world where gamers can converse using rich interactive multimedia. This encourages online gamers to communicate with one another and promotes the formation and maintenance of human connections.

Gaming is a worldwide pastime that brings people together from all walks of life. It is common to meet fans at games. Still, to form connections and become a part of a larger community around a game, gamers frequently visit websites dedicated to discussing their experiences.

External websites facilitate the gaming community by allowing gamers to communicate and offer advice and inspiration.

Why do gamers value the gaming community?

The fact that gamers frequently spend hours alone in front of a screen playing games does not indicate loneliness. People who do not play games often perceive gaming as socially isolating (Shan, 2022).

Communities have been the driving force behind the rise of the video game business. The physical identities associated with video games have altered with new technology, and games have become virtual alternatives to playing at home or anywhere else. Therefore, the gaming community has provided them with more communication methods.

Games are essentially about shared experiences; therefore, all successful games include gaming communities that utilize the various channels to expand and maximize the game and its platform. For instance, gaming enthusiasts can join or build communities and communicate with other players via social media platforms to socialize, share experiences, and trade gaming knowledge or advice.

The Nintendo Switch is a fantastic example of a gaming system that supports multiple players.

The Nintendo Switch can be used either at home on a television or the move in its portable mode. This versatility also applies to co-op and multiplayer games, which can be played using a single Joy-Con controller in desktop mode, both wirelessly online and locally(Petite et. al,2022). Even better, a good number of these Nintendo Switch titles support cross-play with other gaming consoles and personal computers.

In addition to this, there is a sizable gaming community for the Switch and a digital community hub where players of the Switch may interact with one another.

  1. Hi Belle,
I agree Social Gaming is really great for Sociality where like-minded gamers can share interests and form relationships. Gaming is no longer reserved for isolated, sole player capabilities. The gaming community is quite wide and varied and I agree, games are essentially about shared experiences. Your link to the article, "The Rise of Social Gaming and Its Monumental Impact" further highlights the ability for gamers to seek social interaction.
    Well done.

  2. Hi Belle,
This post got me thinking about community gaming and the rise of a new way for gamers to create revenue, through streaming platforms like twitch, etc. I think other than those actually gaming, people that enjoy interacting with others without having to actually play the game also have an online community.

  3. Hey Belle,

I liked your nintendo switch example that supports multiplayer games. The related video is a good addition too. Embedding the article is a great idea as is the little pen gif that brought the blog to life.
