What is digital health?

Digital health uses information and communication technology in medicine and other professions to control disease and health risks and promote healthy development (Fda, 2020). Digital health encompasses a wide range of applications, including wearable devices, mobile health, telehealth, Health Information Technology, and telemedicine (Bernstein,2021)

According to PewResearch (2021), the development of social media platforms has also led to the emergence of an "online health public," with approximately 83% of internet users looking for health information online.

Social media, including healthcare, has negatively impacted many aspects of human society. Moorhead et al. ( 2013) mentioned that "social media brings a new dimension to health care because it allows the public, patients, and doctors to communicate about health issues and potentially improve health outcomes."

Social networking is the future of digital healthcare.

I believe that social networking will have a considerable impact on the healthcare industry in the future, and I think it will occur in a safe, faster, and more feature-rich way than anything else. There's more to this than just social media but creating communities and bonds, connecting people and using technology to make the flow of information more accessible( Mrozowski,2018).

An example of this is Apple's Healthcare app, which launched earlier this year. By enabling users to visualise, securely store, and share their health data, the Health app makes it easier to engage with their health (Apple, 2022).

The role of social media in healthcare

The use of social media provides healthcare professionals with the ability to share information, discuss health policy and practice issues, promote healthy behaviours, interact with the public, and educate and engage patients, caregivers, students, and colleagues (Ventola, 2014).

For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, social media provided a powerful platform for people seeking health information about COVID-19 to update their knowledge and knowledge about the pandemic. People were able to seek accurate health-related information through social media and remain connected with their peers, friends, and families through social media. Some physicians have also started online consultation services through social media platforms.

Social media and mental health

Public health organizations and practitioners often use social media for mass information dissemination rather than engage audiences in genuine multi-party dialogue and interaction (Heldman, Schindelar & Wearer, 2014).

Nowadays, we rely on social media platforms (Such as Twitter) to find and connect. For example, to communicate and keep up to date with family and friends worldwide, connect with others who share similar interests or ambitions, and even seek or provide emotional support during difficult times.

However, connections on social media can never replace real-world relationships because people need face-to-face contact with others to trigger stress-relieving hormones and be happier, healthier, and more positive. Ironically, for technology designed to bring people closer, spending too much time interacting with social media can make you feel lonelier and more isolated and exacerbate mental health problems such as anxiety and depression (McLean hospital, 2022).

A good video!👍

  1. A well known media theorist, McLuhan estimated in the mid 1900s that technology would be an extension of ourselves and that the medium is the message. Reading your post, I recognised that technology like the Apple Watch really is impacting us in various ways and we have definitely headed into the global village era - we are able to access information and contact people in just seconds. Thank you for this lovely post Belle

  2. Hi Belle,

Thank you for your post. Your initial definition clearly set up the topic and I liked your focus on the apple health app. and wearable devices. From personal experience, these have been a game changer for those searching for peace of mind on the go. Although the readings (in my opinion) are not 100% accurate, they do give a good gauge.

  3. Belle what a great blog! I enjoyed your points on the role social media plays in our healthcare, and what it looks like for the future. I never thought about it but you are so right, it is something Apple has already been doing with their watches for years. I also agree that social media has a huge impact on our mental health, however this can sometimes be for better or worse, as we know there are trolls out there!!
